How to calculate the hours between two times
hours worked = end time − start time − unpaid breakEnter a start time, an end time and any unpaid break in minutes. The calculator returns the total as hours and minutes and also as a decimal number of hours, which is the form most payroll and invoicing systems need. Add more rows to total several shifts, for example a week of timesheet entries, and enter an hourly rate to see the pay.
Worked examples
- 09:30 to 17:45 is 8 h 15 min, or 8.25 hours. With a 30-minute unpaid break it becomes 7 h 45 min, or 7.75 hours.
- 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours. When the end time is earlier than the start time, the shift is treated as running past midnight.
- Two shifts, 08:00 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 17:30, total 8 h 30 min, or 8.5 hours.
Minutes to decimal hours
Payroll usually wants 7.75 rather than 7 h 45 min. Divide the minutes by 60: 15 minutes is 0.25, 30 minutes is 0.5, 45 minutes is 0.75, and 10 minutes is 0.17 (rounded).
This calculator works with times of day. If your period runs longer than 24 hours, or crosses time zones, use the Date & Time Difference Calculator, which takes full dates and times.
Everything is calculated in your browser. The dates you enter are never uploaded or stored on our servers; they only appear in a link if you choose “Copy link to this result”.

- Longer periods: for days and weeks use the Days Between Dates Calculator or the Weeks Between Dates Calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate hours between two times?
Subtract the start time from the end time and take off any unpaid break. For 09:00 to 17:30 with a 30-minute break that is 8 hours.
How are overnight shifts handled?
If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator assumes the shift ends the next day. 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours.
How do I convert hours and minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours. 7 h 45 min is 7 + 45/60 = 7.75 hours. The result is shown for you.
Can I add up a whole week?
Yes. Press “Add another shift” for each day and the total updates. You can also add an hourly rate to get the pay.
Does it handle different time zones?
Not here. Use the Date & Time Difference Calculator when the two times are in different zones.
