How business days are counted
A business day is a day that is neither a weekend day nor a public holiday. The calculator walks through every date in your range, skips the weekend days you choose, skips holidays, and counts what is left. By default the start and end dates are both counted, which matches the NETWORKDAYS function in Excel and Google Sheets. Untick the box to leave the end date out, for example when you want the working days that pass before a deadline.
Worked example
Monday 2 February to Friday 27 February 2026 spans 26 calendar days, of which 6 are weekend days. That leaves 20 business days. If you also exclude United States federal holidays, Presidents’ Day on 16 February comes off and the answer becomes 19.
Which holidays are included?
- United States: the federal holidays, moved to their observed dates when they fall on a weekend.
- United Kingdom: bank holidays for England and Wales, including substitute days and Easter, which is worked out for any year.
- India: the three fixed national holidays only. Most Indian holidays depend on the festival calendar and the state, so add yours in the “own holidays” box.
- Anything else: type your own dates, one per line. They are excluded whichever region you pick.
Working in a country where the weekend is Friday and Saturday? Change the weekend setting and the count follows. To find the date that is a set number of business days away, use the Add or Subtract Days calculator with the business days unit.
Everything is calculated in your browser. The dates you enter are never uploaded or stored on our servers; they only appear in a link if you choose “Copy link to this result”.
When a business day count helps
- Delivery and shipping estimates: “5 to 7 business days” only makes sense if you know how many calendar days that is.
- Payroll and leave: count the working days in a pay period or a leave request. For hours within each day, see the Hours Between Times Calculator.
- Contracts and notice periods: many are written in working days rather than calendar days.
- Project plans: turn a start and finish date into working time. For the plain calendar span use the Days Between Dates Calculator.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as a business day?
By default Monday to Friday. You can switch the weekend to Friday and Saturday or Sunday only, and exclude public holidays for a chosen region or your own list.
Does the calculator include the start and end dates?
Both are counted by default, as in Excel’s NETWORKDAYS. Untick the box to leave the end date out.
Why is my answer different from another calculator or my spreadsheet?
The usual causes are whether the end date is counted, which holidays are excluded, and which days are treated as the weekend. Check those three settings first.
Are Scottish, Northern Irish or state holidays included?
No. Only the lists described above are built in. Add any other dates in the “own holidays” box.
How do I add business days to a date?
Use the Add or Subtract Days from a Date and choose business days as the unit.
